MSQ airport

January 2013, Minsk, Belarus. Soviet-era cargo planes at MSQ airport.

Between the woods and snow covered fields the airport of Minsk (MSQ) is an odd appearance. A concrete fortress with a USSR touch, perhaps also because the impressive cargo planes parked on the tarmac.
After disembarking the Belavia plane and boarding the terminal, it’s a bit unclear where to get the mandatory travel insurance. Giving the stairs a try I found them upstairs, two desks with insurance statecompanies “competing” with each other. With the right papers and passport with visa I proceed trough immigration. The next challange is getting some Belarussian rubles for the bus. The exchange office is being renovated and someone tries to tell me to go to the 3rd floor. After walking around a few times I gave up searching for an elevator and carried myself and my suitcase to the third floor, only to enter a dark floor. Some persons are sleeping on a bench but it’s quite and the lights off. Despite the haunting feeling of walking in an empty and dark airport, I start walking, and at the other end of the building, in a dark corner a blinking Sberbank ‘bankomat’ is able to provide me with some cash. The start of holidays in Belarus, odd and interesting at the same time.

Welcome! On this blog I post stuff that might be interesting for others or just random posts on daily life stuff. Some of my posts are in English, maar soms ook gewoon in het Nederlands, net waar ik zin in heb. Enjoy!
